Bad MMO, Good Single Player game July 17, 2010

Cryptic attempted to stay true to the current Trek Canon, which leaves for a mixed blessing. Trekkies will find many references to events spanning the Original Series all the way up to Enterprise. The player starts by making an Engineer, Science or Tactical officer and the tutorial takes it from there.
The game is played both as a space based sim and a ground based squad game. This isn't Wing Commander as capital ships do not turn so quickly so expect a bit of frustration with some ship designs that turn slower than a bus with flat tires. The ships are widely customizable, from purely cosmetic ship hulls and colors to various weapons and weapon types. As you gain rank, you will eventually be granted access to higher tier ships.
Ground based missions are squad based. If you can't find anyone to group with no problem, as you can beam down with npc bridge officers. Their AI is pretty good, they will move out of environmental hazards and heal you if you get hurt (if possible). You have various personal weapon types from pistols, rifles, dual-pistols and assault cannons. Each can be of various types (disruptor, phaser, etc) which have different effects.
Unfortunately, since you can use npc's all the time, there is little reason to group with anyone for ground missions. Space missions scale with you, so if you go in solo it will be scaled for solo play. There are "fleet actions" which are the game's version of raids, yet for the amount of time you invest the rewards are frequently disappointing. Not to mention that there is no grouping up and starting the Fleet Action you just zone in and continue it from whatever point it is currently in. If it has been completed, you will get a timer showing how long before it resets.
The player choice of officer type really has little effect on the ground gameplay. There are no weapon restrictions so your Science (healer) officer can go charging in with a full assault rifle if they choose. Only difference is the "kits" that once equipped grant a few special abilities. Only Science officers can use Science kits, which typically have buff and healing abilities. Without any kits all officer types are basically the same.
If you are looking for a new mmo to dive in to, this is not the game for you. If you want a decent online single player experience that will keep you occupied for a month or two, then Star Trek Online may fit your needs.

i got this for my husband caz he loves games to play on-line and he loves star trek. it worked out great. we did,nt know if it would run on his computer but we have not had alot of prombles with it and it runs great on his computer.

First of all let me say that I am not a professional reviewer nor do I assume or think that I am one. I do play multiple MMOs to include EVE Online, WOW, Champions Online, Second Life, Blue Mars, Anarchy Online, etc. So this review is based on my opinion of the game as a MMO. I am not going to do a elaborate break down of each section, I am not going to use fancy words, and I am definitely not going to blow smoke at you about how horrible this game is. The game is like any other game which will have strengths and weaknesses. Yes sometimes it doesn't feel like a MMORPG, but it is still a lot of fun. Yes sector space feels small, but at least the devs are listening/willing to fix it. Yes you can level really fast in the game, but leveling is a lot of fun. It honestly doesn't feel like a grind because some of the missions are really action packed. Yes this game has a lot of room for improvement, but if you go on the STO forums you will see that the devs actually listening! They are making changes based on what the users want not what they think is good for the game. I frequently lurk on the forums and always impressed on the number of dev posts. The actually game producer, Daniel Stahl, is probably the most active one on the forums. He is always addressing the issues that we have about the game. He is also not stand offish about it. He seems very down to earth and genuinely wants to make the game better. Now for more of the review. I have to admit that the first missions is a little boring. I have leveled three toons and I hate the "demo" mission. After you get done with that you find yourself at SOL space dock. The art in this area is very nice. Once you load up on missions you get story, patrols, defense, and other assorted ones. Some of my favorites are the sector defense missions. In these you basically team up with other players to kill NPCs in space combat. These are very action packed and give out good XP. Honestly I think these missions are want make this game not feel like a grinder. Furthermore, patrol missions are nice because they are quick and easy whilst rewarding decent xp. Additionally, the story missions are actually very engaging. I find myself reading all the NPC text and actually eager to move onto the next mission in the story line to see what is going to happen. I particularly like the Mirror Universe Story line. I hope they expand on it in the future. I will say that ground combat feels lacking. The devs are working on it by putting in ambient creatures. It will be nice to beam on a planet and it feel dead. Also the tedious part of scanning things is going to become a mini game in season 2. I think this will improve the overall fun factor of this feature. All in all season 2 is a lot about making the game better based on user feedback. I think it is going to take this game to the next level. Right now I have to say this about the game. It is a work in progess; what do you expect from a new game? So if you want to try the game do so. Give it your 30 days and cancel if you don't like it. Then come back later as more content gets added. If you like it then stick with it for the long haul. I know I am (Life time subscriber here). All and all no matter what this game deserves a fair chance. Either you are going to love it or hate it. Give it a shot. For $50 you could buy another game that would give you less than 30 days of game play (IE a non-MMO game that is short). So don't listen to me or the other guys bashing this game. Give it a shot for yourself (oh btw on steam this game is going for 6 bucks right now). Thanks for listening.

The game is not that bad. The space battles are better than the ground battles. And the developers have really worked on this game, They have added stuff almost weekly to the game. And most of it is what has been ask for in the forums. So they listen and are active, I think its a good game and was a good buy. Oh and the copy I got still had the preorder Borg Bridge officer.

I have always been a big star trek fan so this game seemed like it was made for me. I had never played a game of this style before so I didn't really know what to expect. I thought it was very user friendly. I was walked through all the steps I needed to take to get started and once I was on my own I had ample time to figure things out at the Earth Space Station. I love the combat! I love getting to make my own crew mates! The game is definately addictive. My only issue, as a mom who is home alone with the kids frequently, is that I can't pause it. For this reason I don't get a chance to play as often as I would like. If this wouldn't be a problem for you then you'll definately love this game!!
