Chess Problems July 16, 2010 J. Drenon As another reviewer stated, the chess game is messed up. But on mine, the problem is that it is impossible to win. Even on the easiest difficulty setting, it's as though you are playing a Grand Master.
I have not looked into the other stated problems, but I have no doubt they exist. Hoyle computer board games just aren't like the real thing.
Nothing New Here August 17, 2009 Calamity Jane 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There is nothing new and different from what Hoyle 2005 has already offered.
Hoyle games are the best games around, but save your money if your looking for a new and improved game since 2005. Everything is the same on the Board Games. No new characters. No new objects to purchase. No new games to try. Backgrounds are a repeat of 2005 too.
I never played the 2005 Puzzles, so I can't speak about the sameness, but these 2007 puzzles are boring to me. They may be to anyone who loves the challenge of the word and board games. If clicking on matching tiles, searching for hidden objects on a grid, and rolling a ball through a maze amuses you, you may find it worth the money and time invested in playing. I do not. Some games will not play on Windows 2000.
My other PC has Windows Vista. Neither disc will download into that version of Windows.
Entertaining but not great June 15, 2009 Russ Atkinson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this 2007 version as a gift and it serves its purpose of keeping me entertained when I am killing time. The games are very uneven and obviously obtained from different sources. The best is Maximum Pool, which is very well implemented. It's quite realistic, it's easy to adjust the difficulty level, and it has a nice variety of games. Don't turn off the tips feature as they're the only way to learn how to use the cue stick and other screen features since they are not well-documented in the instructions. The word games are completely inconsistent, using different word lists. The difficulty settings are poor - very hard to adjust to the right level. Most games are way too easy to beat and a few are impossible to win. The opponents are mostly lousy, but in some cases (like Wordox on highest level) it is impossible to win or even come close unless you have remarkable luck due to most words the opponents use not appearing in any dictionary, and I'm someone who complete the NY Times daily crossword in 10 minutes in ink. The Anagrams game is frustrating in that it doesn't accept a lot of good very common words and includes some that shouldn't be there (like "hes" - without an apostrophe). Still, I enjoy Wordox on the medium level, even though the opponents never play well, and Rays is fun. The chess opponent is terrible. How many zillion chess programs are out there, most of which can blow me away at a relatively low difficulty level and this one loses every time unless I play with wild abandon. If you want a chess program buy a real one. Hoyle went really cheap in buying this one. The Sudoku and Kakuro seem to be the best programmed games with a good interface and consistent difficulty. Slide Tiles and Edge Tiles are challenging. I would like to see better stats kept on some of these games, like average score and high score or best time, but you can't have everything. Personally I think the cartoony opponents and Hoyle Bucks are slightly annoying but easy enough to ignore. Still, there are a lot of games to choose from and anyone who enjoys games can find something that he or she enjoys in this ensemble.
Zilch has several problems. For starters the rules page never tells you that you have to get at least 500 points on the first move before it lets you keep your points. But the big one is the glitch that lets you win almost every time. Spoiler alert: if you don't want to know how to beat the game, stop reading now. Whenever you roll three (or more) of a kind, you can drop all your unmatched dice onto that same row and get another roll. Your opponents never do that, but it allows you to do so.
great games August 9, 2008 Joan Lipson (cochise, az) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love to have these on my computer. I use them as a break from my often tedious work. They go fast and some can be quite challenging
