3 out of 5 stars Problems   July 5, 2010

It had problems installing, eventually leading to me having to delete my user account, because it had ruined all of my files, and after transferring it, you can't play "Beyond The Sword" or "Warlords". I am using a brand-new computer, running on windows 7 64-bit. Colonization is good, which is why I gave it 3 stars, but I can get that separately for about 8 dollars. DO NOT BUY!

1 out of 5 stars Poor design   June 30, 2010

Very poor design - there's too much going on in the background that the game never explains, so you don't really understand why things are happening (or what to do about it). Combat is VERY clunky and irritating. I guess this might be good if you played previous Civs a lot, so you already know the basics, but if you don't... don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great improvement on the Civ series.   June 29, 2010

I played civ I and civ II when I was younger, and the improvements upon the series are solid. I've played through a half-dozen or so games since buying this about a month ago and the differences add a refreshing a new set of game elements. National borders really add to the feeling of a cohesive nation rather then a group of cities along with adding new strategic elements by with things like reducing road availability to enemy nationals when they invade. The system for resource management takes a bit to actually fully understand, but makes tile resources such as fish or iron much more important then previously. Caravans have always been a pain to deal with in Civ I and II and their removal and replacement with trading resources through negotiations is a welcome sight. Just in general a very very solid improvement over the previous games I've played.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition to the Civilization series   June 28, 2010

I have enjoyed each version of this series of games. I have played it from MS-DOS/Windows 3.1 all the way through to Windows 7. I still miss the first version, but can no longer play it. The first version had the best advisers screens with five people dressed in costumes. It was the best part of Civilization I and was never included in any of the versions following. I do not rate a game by nit-picking, finding mistakes or glitches in the programming. I rate a product based upon other factors, such ease of use, playability, story-line, and just plain fun.

This game is just plain fun. It does not need HD video, or fancy things. I have played the same version many times and will continue to play it. Creating my own civilization is also a thrill. To be able to play different civilizations is good because each has its own advantages and disadvantages and thus the way to win is a little different. You can take different philosophies, a war against your neighbors, and economic battle of building wonders before the other civilizations do, or a total destruction of all the other civilizations. You can also do anything between the extremes of war or economy.

This game also has several expansions. The Colonization game is also included. I played this game back in the MS-DOS days and had missed it. Now it is back and is still fun to play.

The game is well worth buying.
