A Dated Classic? June 29, 2010 Dakota Nielsen (Somewhere in the West, USA) I remember when this came out. I remember the hype and the proposed rivalry with games like Battle for Middle Earth (which, despite all the Comic-Con hearsay, this trounces). If you're looking for an RTS, don't get BFME, get SC2, or better yet, SC1! BFME2 is MUCH better than the original anyway. But *ahem* we're here for Rome.
Yes, it's worth buying. It still looks decent, and overall it's fun. Plus, there are tons of great mods out there for it. I recommend Europa Barbarorum. But, the original is just fine too. The launch campaigns for the core game and the expansion are both quite enjoyable, even with some hilarious a-historic material and tacky faction coloring. Hell, that's really all you can put down on this game. Well, besides becoming dated, of course.
Excellent Game! June 12, 2010 Travis E. Phillips This game is very much like Civ4 except that the one thing Civ lacked is here. Massive battles between armies are very cool. The controls are easy although sometimes a bit too simplistic. There is nothing better than having 1000 archers launch arrows at the same time.
The game is definitely worth the price.

Great for teens June 10, 2010 Annette Lyon (United States) My son is an avid fan of games like Warcraft. He raves about how great this game is--and it's hard to get him OFF the computer.
Rome: Total War (Gold Edition) Is It Worth The Risk? April 18, 2010 JamesRollinsAndClemensFan01... Rome. That one name wrought terror in many of the ancients. A Empire that streached from the Britannia to Syria and beyond. A Empire that slowly streached it's mighty arms and gained a huge empire. The only way to accomplish this was to commite a act older than time. Rome gained her illustrious empire by one thing; Total War (and some heavy taxation ;))
I fell in love with Total War due to Medieval II: Total War so I decided to invest in getting Rome: Total War (and because that was one of my favorite civilization)I did know that it was a risk to buy an older game. So was it worth it?
When you first start out Rome: Total War you are too chose between three Roman families Juli, Scepi*, and the Bruti*. You choose your family you want and jump into the game. the three families are controlled by the Senate which is a super-force on the battle map. The battlefield batttles are a wonderful thing. however I did seem to find that if I personally run the battle I have a more higher chance at taking over a settlement. (and a heads up it would be wise to click off the battle time limit when you're starting the campaign)The overlooking map of the territory that you have/have to gain is a little bit different that Medieval II so you may need to adjust to it.
So whats the goal of Rome: Total War?
You as one of the family members have to gain support either in the Senate or in the Public. Once you gain enough power in either one you can send your armies to Rome (Senate capitol [S.P.O.R])and it is easier to get the public support rather than the Senate's. Once done you'll have family members to kick-off of your battle-map. Then after that (or even before than)take over the world, and start you own illustrious empire... And beware Carthage has elephants! (of course)Once your empire has been conquered (gold 50 regions including take over Senate) that you get to play as S.P.O.R, Juli, Sepi*, Bruti*, Carthage, Egypt, Greece, Germania, Gauls, Briton. and once you win over more the playble kingdoms and conquer all regions you will be able to play just about ALL kingdoms...
So is it worth the Risk?
The Risk for Rome: Total War is it's an older game. Yes that can be a semi hang-up specially if your computer has alot on it. I cannot seem to get the game running smoothly no matter how many options I do. It can been irritating at times and you might have to do some persuading but it will work. And that's what counts.
Rome: Total War's graphic's are good for being an older game. The playable kingdoms are quite dynamic and interesting (specially Carthage with those elephants!)I found my-self having fun, and loved the battlefield battles. The cites to tend to riot a bit more in this one, but it's nothing you cannot handle with your ingenuity and alot alot of denarii (currency). The game dose have a irratating little blurps if you do not have a supremely running system. However don't let that deter you away. I found the game to be WELL worth that buy and risk. It's fun, it's ancient, and it's history (sort of you world dominators! ;))what more could you ask for.
Rome: Total War Gold Edition. It's a tad bit different than Rome: Total War but it is worth it buy the Gold Edition or even the one with all three is even better! it is well worth the extra!
