Why all the hate? July 30, 2010 C. Yarbor I keep seeing negative reviews for this game(why?). I have played AVP when it was released in 1999 and I have recently played this one (though only the predator mission because I'm a predator fan) and I can honestly say this is the better game. Rebellion studios has done a tremendous job with this game and should be commended. The graphics are very nice but the aspect that I enjoy about this game is its controls. You can control the predator very well and be just as stealthy and deadly as the predator is in the movies. Yes, there are some very gruesome things you can do in this game including trophy hunt (removing skulls and spines both in a finishing kill and after the fact though only the skull once something is dead.)
The storyline is very intriguing and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I don't see very many good titles on the PC nowadays, but this is one of them. You get an awful lot of interactions and some insights to the predators in this game (i enjoyed the historical videos and the temple of "victory over the serpents". I highly recommend this game to predator fans or just horror fans. Also, the software is very well written and runs very smoothly (my comp specs are 3Ghz processor with 4gb of ram and 1gb graphics card).
You have the ability to stalk humans and androids and there is one area where you can hunt humans (who can't see you and don't know your there) through some ruins in a temple. The aliens are not as fun to fight because they are always attacking you (regardless if your cloaked or not) and this becomes annoying after awhile.
I also enjoyed some of the "realism". In the first predator movie when he walks through water, it disrupts his cloaking field. The same is true in this game. If you walk or fall into water, your cloak will fail and you will be spotted. The jumping is also very nice as it make you a formidable foe to the human and android AIs. It was amusing to be leaping around some unsuspecting foes and hear them shout "I got movement!" or "Something's right on top of us!". A con might be the fact that your plasma caster uses so much energy. However, the cloak uses almost none which is an improvement from the first game.
I have very little negative to say about this game and given that I had a short break this summer, it was very nice to have some time to play a game all the way through. I also think the timing is just right with the Predators movie being released this summer.
Bottom line, if your're a fan of the Predator movies and would like to step into a predators shoes for awhile, this game is worth the meager 30 bucks.
The most disappointing game of the year! July 20, 2010 Donnie Darko As a huge fan of the old ALIEN and Predator games (which were actually good and interesting games) i have to say that this game was a huge disappointment.
Do not buy this game for PC if you expect a nice game with a long single player experience and fastpaced multiplayer action - it will present you none of those features. Even though they have released a few patches, the major problems still exsist. I will list a few things that make this game such a huge disaster:
Game (singleplayer):
- linear gameplay (its just moving from point A to B)
- too short (you can finish all of the three single player games in 2 - 3 hours)
- the characters are chessy and uninteresting
- very flawed level design (all 3 species go through the same levels again and again...)
- AI of the characters is not really challenging
- stupid system of stealth attacks
Game (multiplayer):
- no fast-paced action (because of the slow movements of the marines and predators)
- bad multiplayer menu-design
- not enough maps to play, all of them are just environments from the single player game
- no Alien, marine or predator classes anymore like in the previous game
ALIEN:
- the ALIEN controls are bad and you cant control the creature on your own most of the time
- the ALIEN is not able to pounce at its victims anymore
MARINE:
- the humans are too slow
- you cant crouch (i know it sounds like a joke, but its true)
- the marines can jump, but it it not useful in the game at all
- the flamethrower is not a useful weapon in multiplayer
- the marine has only 6 weapons he can choose from
- you can only carry 3 weapons at the same time
PREDATOR:
- the predator cant crouch (like the marine)
- the movements are slow like the human characters
- there are only 5 Predator weapons in this game you can choose from (remember the last ALIEN vs Predator game, where the predator had 8 weapons)
- you have only 2 vision modes
I could go on with the list for hours....
My final verdict: DO NOT BUY this game unless you have plenty of money for sega and rebellion left...
Beware used copies!!! July 18, 2010 Timothy R. Sullivan (Beaver, WV) Beware of buying used copies of this game. You must register this on Steam and the product key will only work for one steam account. If someone has already registered the game you buy used, then you are out of luck. You CANNOT register the same product key again. Make sure you are buying a new, never used game.
A really big disappointment for fans July 12, 2010 Daniel Blaut (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ive been a big fan of the aliens vs predator games even for the 1999 series (which I still love to play)and this game was a really BIG disappointment. I almost threw up that I had to pay 50$ on steam for this piece of junk. The plot is very short but not bad. They made several weapons that where really enjoyable in the old games very useless against anything. They really rushed everything, its almost like they where on a tight deadline and had to have it released by this date or else because this was the shortest game I've ever played in my life. They would have to do A LOT of upgrading in order to make this game more popular because right now it's just destroyed. The reason why I give it 2 stars is the graphics and the plot.
Xenomorph Easy, Zero Checkpoints + Marine/Predator Campaigns = Frustrating. July 5, 2010 L. Joann Shea-foss (Grand Junction, CO USA) Fun : 5/5 Stars
Graphics : 5/5 stars
Story : 5/5
Gameplay 2/5
Mapping 3/5
Difficulty 6/5
Multilayer(Xbox live) 4/5
Let me say a synopsis;
Xenomorph : Easy as hell, no challenge at all. FUN FUN FUN.
Marine : Frustrating. In the marine campaign you die at point blank range of killing a xenomorph. The game has lost one star because of the lack of armor from the previous game that could have substituted as protection against the Xenomorphs molecular acid at point blank. Also why use flares instead of the conventional flashlight? Also the game's Zero Checkpoints on Nightmare Difficulty is stupid and unnecessary. Stupid being that it builds way too much tension. Also for those of you who don't know Zero Checkpoints means it means that if you die you start over from point A of the level, saves are also disabled in the Nightmare. The game-play requires way to much "Hit-and-run" tactics and accuracy. Which makes the Marine Campaign unfun. But predator.
Predator : Easy/Frustrating. The marines are easy as hell, Pop stealth get behind them. Fire your laser, Distract. Easy. The XenoMorph's however are Easy/frustrating depending on the difficulty. At the beginning of the level you have two claws as melee. With Practice you can knock them on the ground, grab and lay a finishing move on them which equals Fun. The xenomorphs's are a pain however when on Hard or Nightmare difficulty. Being that you can never knock them down for a finishing move EVER. There is really a lot of strategy to beat them on at the first 3/6 Levels. The game however gets Easier once you get the Disc blade thing, and the spear. Which you can one shot them. Also you don't need to worry about dieing at point blank range from the Xeno's Molecular acid because of the Predator's armor, which makes the predator more fun then the marine campaign.
Consensus: The gameplay is Fun/Easy/Challenging for the most part. But for the Marine Campaign Sega could have tried harder with the mapping and gameplay.
