You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands on the continent of Thedas throughout the centuries. Betrayed by a trusted general in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice. As you fight your way towards the final confrontation with an evil nemesis, you will face monstrous foes and engage in epic quests to unite the disparate peoples of a world at war. A romance with a seductive shapeshifter may hold the key to victory, or she may be a dangerous diversion from the heart of your mission. To be a leader, you must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice your friends and loved ones for the greater good. Gameplay Dragon Age: Origins is a 3D oriented RPG based in a dark, heroic, fantasy realm where moral choices have a lasting impression on the people you meet, the members of your own party and the world around you. The inclusion of subtitle "Origins" in the game's title refers to the six unique origin stories available to new heroes as a new game begins. Each of these has an impact on the player's motivations and his or her experience, and renders a unique prelude, path, and possible ending(s) to the game. There are many different endings to the game based on the origin story of the character and the choices you make as you play through the game. The game features three character classes--warrior, mage, and rogue--and three races of being--Human, Elf or Dwarf--that can assume these classes. Although most game elements, such as weapons, magic, etc., are available to any character, each class and race has different strengths, abilities and affinities which lend themselves to better utilizing different elements. Dragon Age: Origins is a single player game based on party-based gameplay and combat where the player can join, control and quest with up to three non-player characters (NPCs). Players can also quest alone if they so choose, but with the chance of survival are slim. Convincing NPCs to join you, and treating them well may be necessary depending on the varying sentiments between the player and the NPC, or between the NPC's in the party based on the chosen history written into the origin story accepted at the beginning of the game. This uncertainty allows for a variety of possible dynamics within the party ranging from open hostility, all the way to romance. The game progresses in real-time via a pause-and-play tactical combat system that allows the player to check inventory levels, equip a character, etc. in a slight vacuum. Additional features found in the game include: a combination of a standard loot system and a currency system based on gold silver and copper; advanced character customization functionality; the use of poison, traps and herbalism; dual-wielding skills; and "spell combos," which allow players to chain together different spells to create a unique effects. Enjoyably addictive July 30, 2010 Armand F. Baker (Upstate New York) GameSpot made this game an "Editor's Choice," and gave it a rating of 95 which is about as high as they ever rate a game, and I agree completely with this rating. I am about three quarters of the way through the game now, and I am tempted to say that I have enjoyed it more than any other game I have played. Many of the games have had interesting, individual quests, and the combat combat action has given satisfaction when I was able to win a battle, but the story was often boring and unoriginal. With Dragon Age, Origins the story line is so interesting and the characters are so distinctive that I have gotten totally involved with what is happening. My favorite characters have been Allister, Leliana and Wynne, with Morrigan and Oghren also quite enjoyable. The voice acting is excellent, making the characters seem like real people whom you care about, or whom you don't like very much at all. For example, Leliana and Wynne are very likable, while Morrigan is interesting with a complex personality, but because of her difficult childhood she has some negative characteristics. There may very well be other interesting characters you can choose (you are always accompanied by 3 other characters) but I have liked those I started out with so much that I have not wanted to make more than a superficial attempt to get to know the others. The graphics are not as good as some of the online games I have played like World of Warcraft or, especially, Lord of the Rings Online, but they are better than any other game I have gotten from a disc. This game is complex enough that I will probably feel like playing it again after I am done to see if I can learn to do things better.
Great Game! July 27, 2010 K. Murray (Mansfield, OH United States) I was looking for a replacement for the Elder Scrolls series, especially Oblivion - Dragon's Age is very similar. Should provide many, many hours of play!
No longer any doubts, worthy of 2009 RPG of the year July 20, 2010 W. Knape (Westland, MI USA) I had serious doubts about this game, even though I am a huge Bioware fan. I simply was never a big dark fantasy fan. Something about The Witcher-enhanced edition never felt right to me. The Witcher was a good game, but not a great game in my opinion. After finishing Mass Effect 2, I was in search of another RPG and I finally decided to give this game a try. I wasn't expecting the true brilliance of this game. I had heard the story was typical fare and I really did not have high expectations. I love the story and once again, I find myself caring for the companion characters! The gameplay is very challenging, but very fun. A word of warning, if you find yourself having trouble, consult some of the walkthroughs on the web. Although you can play many of the quests in any order you want, they are levelled in such a way that some areas are easier than others. If a specific area is too much for you, come back to it later. I actually started to appreciate this as it definetely makes you feel like you are getting more powerful, when impossible tasks become possible. Sorry for my rambling. Point is, if you like very deep and well built RPG's you will love this game! Great job Bioware!!!
P.S. Buy the PC version for better visuals and available mods.
Great July 17, 2010 Bboyhamster Bought this for my brother for his birthday. He's been playing for the last 2 months and is only 30 percent done. Overall He enjoyed this game. It's a long game o.o.
Over way too quick July 11, 2010 Linda Williams (Willits, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed playing this the first time through, it was much anticipated and delivered on a fine weekend of immersion therapy. But even with the different origin options I was disappointed that the game didn't hold my interest through the replays. It lacks the scope of something like Fallout 3 or Oblivion, as one cannot really do any independent exploration. It just couldn't hold my interest on further replays. Left me wondering, Is that all there is? I tried playing around with the various romance options and other dialogue differences, but since you are limited to exploring only handful of locations with the same scenarios each time there was no freshness in subsequent replays.
