5 out of 5 stars The Best game ever   May 7, 2010
Fedor Prokoshin (Dubna, Russia)
I played this one first time in 2005, and many times later, and it's still gives a lot of fun! The same is for Rome Total war.

This pack comes in two thick VHS - size boxes.
It the first box:
- The game in 2 DVDS
- Making of DVD
- Soundtrack
- Manual
- Color map of size A3 approx
- list of buildings and unit on two sides, of the same size

In the second:
- two DVDS with the pack, and update to 1.3 of the original game
- manual to the expancion path

Now, with Kingdoms pack, it's time to take warpath to drive palefaces back to the sea!
Also the Eternal City should be put under the righteous rule of Basileus, together with the Holy land.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Game   May 2, 2010

Think Age of Empires II cranked up about 100 times. This game is a ripper. Those who love medieval RTS will be in heaven here. The game's depth and complexity will be a little overwhelming for beginners but is so worth the effort and makes for a much more richer and satisfying gaming experience.

5 out of 5 stars Medieval 2 Total War (Gold Edition) Review, Is It Worth It???   April 18, 2010

Ahh, yes, the Medieval age a time for strong fortified castles to dot the landscape through Europe and the Middle East (and northern parts of Africa)and huge cities to be plaged by The Great Death and more important a time for Total War.
This game takes you too the middle ages of history. You choose from over 10 possible playable kingdoms from England to Egypt. Your goal? Total and utter domination!Rule your land through diplomacy, treachery, and beyond all war. You as the supervising general for all armies. Your hand can play major roles in your quest for domination when you attack and choose to play the battle in question on the battlefield. Or put your armies under AI control and let them do your dirty work, there are more than willing.
Medieval II: Total War was a game that caught my interest from playing Para World on my computer I knew that I liked controling an army and building magnificent cities. However Total War is MUCH better than Para World.
I've played Medieval II Total ALOT! I've been just about all the playable kingdoms there is to be and still find it a fun game.
The graphics in the game a spectacular and keeps the Total War 'flavor' (as I like to call it)It did start a little rough on my computer but with a few compromises I got it working slick. The cities and castles in the game are also magnificent in the game, much, much detail. And I liked that you have different units within castles, which you can have many or few (I'd only go with a few castles on the outskirts of your enemy's kingdom. if you have to many you won't be able to get alot in taxes. and iff you are in need of taxes you can allways convert your castle into a city.)

The over-all of this game is Awesome! A verry good buy and well worth the money there is nothing bad about this game. Other than the two things I noted on, but those are really, really minuscule compaired to how great the game is.

Medieval II: Total War Gold Edition is the actual Medieval II game with the exspansion packs with it (America's,Britannia,Crusades, and Tuetonic)The exspansion packs are good but are more in-depth in the certain area and the Battle map is on a smaller more personal scale on the indivusual packs. They rate just like Medieval II: Total War. Verry, verry good games.

These games are spectacular. I have owned the games from the relese dates! Graphics are excellent, action is awesome, and many factions to enjoy! Kingdoms is good too with 5 mini campaigns that are also very fun. Of those I like Britannia and Crusades best. You have got to get these games! You cant say you've ever lived until you got some Total War in your life!

2 out of 5 stars Long on Eye Candy, Short on Game Play   March 27, 2010

I've had several others from the Total War series -- Shogun, Medieval (w/ Viking Invasion expansion pack) and Rome -- and so when I loaded this I was excited. Imagine my surprise when I found myself, after about 30 minutes into the game....bored. Almost everything on the screen is animated, slowing down gameplay, and I just got tired of waiting for the various priests, diplomats and merchants to walk around the screen. Why do I have to watch for 10 seconds as my army, represented by a single soldier, swings his sword at the city I'm attacking? Why do I have to listen to the voices of diplomats, etc.? Some people (with higher end computers) may enjoy all the eye candy but for me it's just a waste of time. Mind you, I have a new and robust PC with Windows 7 and a dedicated video card; it's just that the animations do little for the game. I wish, as in some game sequels that went the over-animation route, you had the option of turning off the animations. Seeing the wind blow through the trees or the water splash on the shores of the Adriatic does nothing for the game. After the 'cute' factor wears off (in about 10 minutes), they just get in the way and waste PC resources.

The real meat of the game is weaker than its predecessor, M:TW (1), where practically all the graphics and sound effects were reserved for the (spectacular) battle scenes. Diplomacy, while conceptually better, behaves weird and irrational. It's clear they haven't worked the AI's kinks out yet there. The maps are less contrastive and difficult to read. Some great mods came out for M:TW (1) which expanded the factions for the historically-minded and while the mod community will no doubt catch up for (2), for now out-of-the-box, you're stuck with, for the most part, the usual largely Western European suspects to play. With each successive Total War game -- I also just bought Empire -- I notice that free-style game play is increasingly limited in favor of more structured, scripted campaigns. This allows for much more hyper-animation while limiting your options in how you can interact with factions, etc. This game does have the "Grand Campaign" which allows you (after you play one of the 5 initial Western factions to completion so you can unlock 12 more factions) to play something akin to a free-style game, but you are constantly fed goals to achieve (e.g., "capture that city", "build this structure", etc.) which effectively push you towards a more scripted outcome.

The original M:TW was a complex game and it took a while to learn but when I finally did "get it", it opened up countless hours of fun and great stress release. Maybe without that comparison I would be more generous towards M:TW (2), but I am disappointed that this game seems to have watered down great game play in favor of flashy animations and graphics, leaving me, as I said at the beginning, quite frankly, bored.
